LAYERING PRINTS
& SCANNED IMAGES
After discussing my project so far, as well as where I see it heading in my individual tutorial, Fran mentioned that my edits so far are too obvious and show a clear juxtaposition between nature and man made sculpture/buildings. From here I decided to begin to scan in my prints and sketches on top of another to get an idea of depth and what it would look like to have multiple images formed together. Using holes and windows to create gaps to add other images behind worked out really well and has taken this basic idea to the next level with many possibilities to delve myself into.
The image above and below are experiments between monochrome & coloured copies to see which method is more effective for the viewer. I do really love the coloured versions as there is a strong contrast, but is this edit too obvious again like fran mentioned? The blue in the photo does overpower the actual building itself. The blue ink on the other hand has a more subtle and toned down approach which balances out the layers, but still makes it hard to identify the multiple sections of the image. The black and white versions are a more subtle and require the viewer to look closely. Looking forward I could add small hints of colour in my work, like Bonet does in her photograpy pieces e.g. the yellow road lines.
I have continued layering buildings on top of another. There are so many windows and gaps which could potentially be filled with other imagery to develop this further.
hints of gritty blue ink drift onto the paper in places, and remind me of the sea. You can see that swift movement that I made whilst applying the ink, that looks like a wave or flowing of water which is quite interesting. Instead of using images of water, I could recreate it myself with other mediums, as well as taking an abstract more subtle approach at recreating water like below.
Using a mixture of mediums and papers to collage with adds to the excitement and interest f the piece in my opinion. I love to see these materials collide together to create one piece with a lot happening at once. I have used copic markers, tracing paper, fine liner, newsprint paper, ink, and card. The card with the 2 rectangles cut out came from packaging for a delivery which I have now used to build up layers. The woodland mural at the Walsall gallery has definitely inspired me to push the idea of layering.
