PHOTOSHOP EDITING PROCESS

As I will be using this technique through out this project, I wanted to show the step by step process on how I create these digital collages on Photoshop.

The image used is from Brindley Place exploration shoot to gather more primary source images to play around with. I will most likely use my favourite images from the last 2 shoots later on in my project.

I'm planning on trying out different methods of creating this effect to see which is the most efficient, whilst adding more depth and research to the concept.

Step By Step -

For this edit, I'm using this image of the arch structure as it has multiple gaps in between, making the editing process easier/quicker to complete. First of all, I imported the photo file into Photoshop, scaled it to the right size to fill out the page.

The next step is to use the 'Pen Tool', and begin to click along the outskirts of the area which I intend to delete. In this case, cutting inside each arch section. Holding the tool down from one point to another allows me to curve the tool which creates a smoother and cleaner line for the top of the arch.

Once one area is all lined out and joint back up together, I clicked on the 'Make Selection' button. Here you can 'Feather' the edges to fade them out, to get a softer edge but for this purpose I kept it on 0. Clicking OK, and then pressing Control + J opens up another layer with the new replica image with your section cut out.

The section is now cut out, and you can add another layer with another image on which will show underneath. For now, I continued cutting the other arches out.

All 3 arches are now cut out to the best of my abilities. My photoshop skills are beginning to progress and I can do tasks like this quicker than I could a month ago.

On the right side, you pull the landscape image underneath the edited layer of building/sculpture, so that it sits behind the cut out section.

I used the same technique to cut around the edge of the building to get rid of the background. This adds a new way of looking at the piece.
